Weekend in Paris
Posted by Rob under: Family .
Got back on Sunday evening from a weekend in Paris. Since my Dad was with us for a week, we thought it would be nice to do something a little different, and so he kindly offered to pay for us all to have a night in a hotel. We set off fairly early on Saturday morning and got back at about 9:30 Sunday evening.
Paris is a great city - seriously, if you’ve never been, you really are missing a rich cultural and historic experience. Having been there quite a few times, I consider myself reasonably knowledgeable about Paris, but on this brief trip I managed to add the following new experiences: a visit to the Latin quarter, home of the Sorbonne university, lots of bookshops and some very pretty and very busy little streets full of all kinds of restaurants; a night-time trip on the “bateaux mouches” - I had previously done this during the day, but floating along the Seine by night and seeing the various buildings and monuments in all their floodlit glory was a delight; walking through the Place Vendôme area with its top-notch hotels, expensive cars (our favourite was a Lamborghini of some kind) and jewellers; seeing the Opera (next time we’d like to go inside); seeing the Madeleine (a large, imposing church built in the style of a classical Greek temple); and walking past the Elysée palace, which is the French President’s official residence. And we even stumbled across a branch of WH Smith, and enjoyed a rare opportunity to browse English-language books.
For some reason, Bethany particularly enjoyed riding on the metro. We went on 15 different metro trains during our two days.
