God told me….

Just discovered a great blog by an American pastor called Brian Jones (www.brianjones.com). He has a great post (among many others) about the fact that we can never, ever be sure that God has spoken to us, apart from where we’ve read something in the Bible. Have a look here.

A salutory thought, and a comfort to all those who feel like second-class Christians because others go round saying, “God told me this,” “God told me that” at every end and turn. I firmly believe, on the authority of Scripture, that God communicates with his people, but we ought not to give the impression that he has a hotline to certain Christians which is unavailable to lesser mortals.

I think one of the biggest problems this causes is that it simply entrenches people in their own personal views. How can you argue with or convince someone who says “I know this is what I should do because God told me”?
